nol Card in Dubai: Balance, Recharge and Types
Most Metro passengers need a nol card or Red Ticket before passing through the gates. The practical questions are simple: which product to buy, whether there is enough balance for the trip, and when an online top-up will actually be ready to use.

Which nol card should you buy?
For a visitor making several Metro trips, the Silver card is usually the easiest starting point: it is reusable, works in Regular Class and can also be used across other RTA transport. A Red Ticket can make sense for a very short stay with only a few planned journeys. Gold is for passengers who specifically want the Gold Class cabin; it is not a faster route or a different train.
Personal cards are aimed at passengers who need registration features, balance protection or an eligible concession. Children aged 5 and below are currently listed by RTA as travelling free and do not need a nol card.
| Product | Best suited to | Published purchase or use detail |
|---|---|---|
| Silver card | Regular Class and repeated journeys | AED 25 purchase price, including AED 19 initial balance. |
| Gold card | Gold Class on Metro and Tram | AED 25 purchase price, including AED 19 initial balance; Gold fares apply. |
| Personal card | Registered services and eligible concessions | Personalised card with account and replacement features. |
| Red Ticket | A limited number of journeys | Paper ticket, valid for 90 days and reloadable for up to 10 journeys or 5 daily passes. |
How to check your nol card balance
For an RTA nol card balance check, use the nol Pay app or the balance checker on the RTA website. You will need the nol Tag ID printed on the card. A station ticket vending machine can also show the available value when the physical card is placed on the reader.
Check the usable balance, not only the online payment receipt. Some online recharges remain pending until the card is presented to an activation channel, so a successful payment does not always mean the new amount is immediately available at the gate.
nol card online recharge and activation
The quickest top-ups are normally those made at a ticket vending machine, ticket office or another channel that writes the new value directly to the card. With nol Pay or another supported NFC app, the recharge can also become available immediately after the card is scanned and tapped again as instructed.
If the Tag ID is entered manually on the RTA website or in a non-NFC channel, RTA says the pending amount may take 45 minutes to 4 hours before it can be activated. Activation can then be completed through a supported app or device, including a Metro gate. Do not leave an online recharge until the moment you need to board.
nol card minimum balance
RTA currently states that a nol card needs at least AED 7.50 to use public transport. Treat that as the minimum needed to approach the journey, not as the price of every trip: the actual deduction depends on the card type and the fare tier.
A new Silver or Gold card is sold for AED 25 with AED 19 already loaded. Before a longer journey or a day with several trips, leave enough value for the complete itinerary rather than planning around the bare minimum.
Where to buy a nol card in Dubai
Metro ticket offices and ticket vending machines are the most straightforward places to buy a Silver or Gold card or a Red Ticket. At Dubai International Airport, the Metro stations at Terminals 1 and 3 have ticket facilities, which is useful if the first trip begins at DXB.
Product availability varies by channel. Personal cards, registration, replacement and account services should be handled through the relevant RTA nol service rather than assumed to be available at every machine.
Using the card at Metro gates
Tap the card or ticket at the entry gate and wait for the reader to accept it. Use the same product at the exit gate so the system can complete the journey and deduct the correct fare. Each fare-paying passenger needs their own valid product; a Personal card belongs to the person to whom it was issued.
If a top-up is still pending, the gate may not treat it as available balance. Check before travelling, particularly when the card has not been used since an online recharge.
Validity, registration and travel passes
Silver and Gold cards are issued with a five-year validity. RTA also describes a two-year period after expiry during which the card cannot be topped up. A Red Ticket is valid for 90 days and has its own journey or daily-pass limits.
RTA lists 7-day, 30-day, 90-day and 365-day travel passes. Anonymous Silver and Gold cards are limited to the 7-day product, while registered cards can use the longer published periods. Registration also matters if balance protection or replacement is important.
